HOLE 1
A reachable dogleg left Par 5 for the long hitters. While the hole doglegs left, a well placed tee shot will avoid the left trees, which if you end up there, a chip out is in your future. A strategic layup either short of or past the fairway bunker at 100 yards is necessary to have a chance at birdie on the opening hole.

HOLE 2
Watch for the hole location as you attack this par 3 that is well guarded by two bunkers. A front hole location is a good birdie chance if you get your ball on the green. A back right or back left hole location is a small target to hit, and a ball in the center of the green is your best option.

HOLE 3
A well-placed tee shot in the fairway will provide you a scoring opportunity. If the hole location is on the left side of the green, you have a chance for a birdie, but be careful not to go long or left. If the hole location is on the right side of the green, the middle of the green is your best friend.

HOLE 4
Avoid the left bunker with your tee shot and this is another scoring hole. The green is well bunkered and a hole location on the right side of the green is a sucker hole location. Resist the temptation to shoot at any right hole locations and just like hole #3, remember that the center of the green is a good spot to be. Any balls that find a greenside bunker will be difficult to get on the green let alone close to the hole.

HOLE 5
Keep your tee shot to the right side of the fairway as all balls will funnel left toward the middle of the fairway. Be sure to choose a club off the tee that won’t go through the fairway. The 2nd shot is up a severe slope that plays 12 yards longer than the actual yardage. Be aware of the hole location here as the green is large and has a sharp rise from the front of the green to the back tier of the green.

This is an amazing downhill par 3 where Rees Jones has done a magnificent job with the green complex. The green is divided into four distinct compartments. If you find the correct quadrant on the green you will have a good look at birdie. Failure to get the ball in the right section of the green and you will be working hard to avoid a 3 putt.

Patience. Be patient and get your tee shot in the fairway on this sharp dogleg right uphill Par 5. Be sure to play close attention to the distance to the fairway bunker on your tee shot. A ball that falls to the right off the tee is best. Bombers may choose to cut the corner, but make sure your angles are right and keep the ball on the correct line. A ball that is left of target off the tee will be left with a chip-out. A well-placed lay-up (2nd shot) will leave you with a wedge approach. Be sure to pay close attention to the hole location as there are three distinct levels to this green and putting from behind the hole will be a lag putt for sure.

A tee shot in the fairway on this straight away uphill par 4 is a must. Balls in the left rough will leave an approach that will be difficult to hold this green with a narrow approach. Balls falling short and right off the tee will leave a long and blind approach to a narrow green.

A good drive is a must if you want to make par 4 on the last hole of opening 9. If you find the fairway, you will be left with a long, challenging approach. Balls that miss left in the greenside bunker are a tough up and down. If you can make 4 on this hole, you have finished the front nine off in great fashion.

HOLE 10
Bombers will have a good chance to get home in two if they can get their tee shot in the fairway on this reachable Par 5. A ball that finds the right bunker off the tee leaves a challenging lay-up. If you elect to go for the green, you will have a forced carry over water to a raised green. If you bail out left, you are in a tough spot and getting your next shot on the green is a good play. If you lay the ball up in the fairway you should have a wedge in your hand and a good chance to hit it close and make a birdie. Statistics will show more birdies from layups than from those who go for the green.

HOLE 11
This is the longest Par 4 on the golf course and will require a tee shot in the fairway to give you a good chance to get the ball on the green in regulation. The approach is open to this green so the approach is relatively simple, and the green is receptive to a run-up shot from longer distances. Par is a good score on Hole # 11 at Big Spring.

HOLE 12
A true risk-reward driveable downhill par 4 that is well guarded by water and bunkers. Those who go for the green may have a putt for eagle and a good chance for a birdie, but if you are unsuccessful, you will likely make a bogey or more on the shortest par 4 on the course. If you lay up, pay attention to the distance you hit your tee shot and give yourself a 100 yard approach. A nice wedge into the green should give players a good birdie opportunity.

HOLE 13
A good tee shot is a must on this par 4 in order to have an opportunity to get your 2nd shot on the green. Balls that miss right will find a watery grave, and drives that miss left will likely be blocked out on an approach to this green. The 2nd shot plays 9 yards longer than actual distance because it is significantly uphill. The right side of the green is well guarded by a bunker and the best play is to the center of the green. Make a par here and you are gaining strokes on the field.

HOLE 14
This is a great risk-reward tee shot. The fairway short of the left fairway bunker is nearly 50 yards wide and the easiest target. Pay close attention how far you need to hit your tee shot to lay up to this spot. If you lay up on your tee shot, you will be left with 125 yards uphill to the green and you should have a good chance for birdie. If you decide to hit an aggressive shot off the tee, be sure to favor the left side as any ball in the right fairway bunker leaves the toughest shot in golf… a 40-60 yard bunker shot uphill. If you can safely get your tee shot in the fairway left of the bunker you will be left with a short approach and good opportunity to make birdie.

The green is well guarded by bunkers on this mid-length Par 3. If you avoid the bunkers you should be able to walk off the green with a 3 or better. If the hole location is back left, don’t attack and play to the center of the green as any balls right of the flag but hole height will find trouble long. Any front and center hole locations are good to attack and you may have a good chance for birdie here.

HOLE 16
Bombers delight here with another risk-reward tee shot. The longest hitters can take their tee shot over the left bunker and leave an opportunity to get home in two. Most players should keep the ball to the right of the bunker and play 16 as a 3 shot hole. If you can lay the ball up to wedge distance, you should have a good opportunity to make a birdie or par. The green is small and most balls on the green will leave you a good putt for birdie.

A tough finishing hole that requires patience. Get the tee shot in the fairway and favor the right side of the hole to allow yourself to stay in the hole. The green is well guarded with bunkers and requires a well-played approach shot, on the correct level of the green. Any shots over the green on a back hole location is trouble, and it is a very challenging up and down. 4 is a good score on the finishing hole!
